General & Preventive Dentistry

Promoting Health and Prevention in New Oxford and the surrounding communities

Keeping your smile healthy extends beyond just bright white teeth. Our general dentistry services include an examination of your mouth — your gums, teeth, jaw, tongue and other soft tissues. We promote hygiene habits that eliminate decay-causing bacteria and help you to establish a routine that you can perform at home to maintain your smile.

Our general dentistry services are perfect for the whole family.

From baby teeth to permanent adult teeth, we can take care of them all. We begin seeing children before their first birthday to help parents develop healthy habits for their new baby. We teach proper mouth care to set children on the pathway to a lifetime of great dental health. Our youngest patients can visit our office, feeling comfortable and actually enjoying their time at the dentist.

We have the technology and years of experience that allow us to identify problems before they become larger issues, saving you time and money in the future. We believe in prevention and stopping decay, gum disease and other complications in their tracks. All our services are tailored specifically to your needs, and every treatment plan is unique to each patient.

Regardless of your current oral health, a thorough exam and appropriate screenings are the first steps toward a healthy and beautiful smile. Contact us today for an appointment.

Comprehensive Exams

All new patients to our office receive a complete, thorough exam to evaluate their current oral health and formulate an individualized treatment plan. Our comprehensive exams include oral cancer screenings, digital x-rays and medical history. We evaluate all areas of your mouth, including your teeth, gums, soft tissue, jaws and bones.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Detecting oral cancer as soon as possible can be lifesaving, as early detection can have a big impact on your treatment. We use visual and manual screening methods to search for any abnormal tissue on your cheeks, gums, tongue and other areas. Anyone can be diagnosed with the disease; however, alcohol and tobacco use increases the risk of developing oral cancer. When it comes to oral cancer, the earlier the detection the better, so get screened today and keep yourself protected.

In order to properly diagnose and treat our patients, we need to see exactly what is going on inside their mouths, even under the surface. Our high-resolution digital and panoramic x-rays give us just that – an inside view of the development of teeth and bone, as well as the progression of disease or decay. We have also added the latest Cone Beam x-ray technology to provide a 3D view of your jaw. This amazing development allows us to see and treat areas with even greater accuracy. X-rays are an important part of our diagnosis. They allow us to track areas of concern and show you the areas where treatment is needed.

Keeping your teeth clean and free of tartar and plaque buildup is essential for maintaining a healthy mouth. Our dental hygienists can start you on the path to dental health with a professional cleaning to remove debris from the enamel surface and between your teeth. We will also recommend helpful products to break the disease cycle and advise you on the best time interval for your appointments. Schedule a professional hygiene appointment today.

Periodontal Therapy

Keeping your gums healthy is as essential to a great smile as strong, beautiful teeth. Periodontitis, or gum disease, is a major cause of adult tooth loss and can lead to serious complications. If your gums are receding, bleeding or swollen, you may have gum disease. We’ll examine your gum pockets and remove plaque and debris from under the gum line with root planing and oral irrigation, ensuring your gums stay healthy for the life of your smile.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride treatments help restore essential minerals to your tooth enamel and can decrease sensitivity to changing temperatures. Children can benefit from regular fluoride treatments every time they visit, as it’s vital to protect developing teeth from decay. Once all permanent teeth have erupted, we’ll offer fluoride treatments to adults as needed. We recommend brushing with a fluoride toothpaste as part of your daily hygiene routine to keep your smile healthy between visits to our office.

It’s possible to damage your teeth and not even be aware that it’s happening. Grinding or clenching your teeth often takes place while you are asleep. The results are damage to the enamel on your teeth, excessive tooth wear and tired jaw or face muscles. A properly designed mouthguard can help to control the strong jaw muscles and prevent damage to your teeth and muscles. Grinding can be associated with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems and sleep apnea, both serious concerns that we can identify. Mouthguards can also be made for protection during athletic activities to prevent chipping or breaking of your teeth.

Patient Comfort

We can prescribe oral medication for patients who need a little extra help relaxing during a procedure. You’ll remain awake, aware and able to respond, but you’ll feel calm, relaxed and comfortable. Talk to Dr. Waring for more information and find out if this option is right for you.

Emergency Care

Dental emergencies are never planned. However, we plan time in our schedule to meet unexpected needs. We want to get you back to your day as quickly as possible with your problem addressed. Necessary emergency care is also available when our office is closed.

Getting to see what the dentist sees helps you understand your diagnosis better and allows you to visualize the areas of concern. Our intraoral cameras will enable you to understand any concerns or issues that Dr. Waring may identify.
